Summer Music Scholarship Winners Announced This Sunday

American Idol’s Sam Woolf will perform during scholarship announcement event.

SARASOTA, FLA. — After raising $35,000 for music education during the 2016 Rock for a Cause, the executive committee, along with members of the Del Couch Music Education Foundation and Manatee School for the Arts, held auditions earlier this month for students seeking scholarships for the Berklee College of Music Summer Programs.

We were thrilled to have seven aspiring young musicians bring their A-game during an afternoon of auditions, held at the Del Couch Music Education Foundation studio, housed within the Manatee School for the Arts Music Department. Students from Sarasota and Manatee schools featured their talents ranging from vocals and guitar to woodwinds and production.

Rock for a Cause Raises $35,000 for Music Education

The third annual Rock for a Cause took over Main Street in Downtown Sarasota on Nov. 12, bringing together great music, local businesses and a worthy fundraising effort for music education for kids in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The annual event is presented by S-One Holdings Corporation, headquartered in Sarasota.

We’re excited to announce that the 2016 Rock for a Cause raised a total of $35,000. Proceeds from the event will be used to send students of the Del Couch Music Education Foundation to the Berklee College of Music Summer Programs.

“S-One has been a great supporter of music education, and this will make a huge impact on the students in our Foundation,” says Del Couch, founder and director of the Del Couch Music Education Foundation. “The Berklee College of Music is the top music school in the country, and these summer camp programs can be life-changing. In fact, Sam Woolf, who was a top 5 finalist on American Idol is an alumni of our Foundation, tried out for the show while he was attending a Berklee summer camp that the Foundation was able to send him to.”

Students of the Foundation will be asked to fill out applications for spots at next summer’s Berklee programs.

During Rock for a Cause, six bands competed for $1,500 cash. Spectators voted on-site and chose Bl3nded, a trio of high school students, as this year’s winner. Other acts that competed included: Trey Wanvig Band, Rickey Tedesco, South Trail Band, The Tattered Saints and The David Smash Band. Bl3nded will also perform at the 2017 Sarasota Music Half Marathon on Feb. 5 in the Rock for a Cause entertainment zone.

“This was our first competition so we were very nervous, especially since there were other talented musicians in the competition with more experience,” the members of Bl3nded said. “We were so grateful that so many people came out to watch and be a part of something so cool and monumental for us.”

Ray Collins from ABC-7 once again emceed Rock for a Cause, which featured many corporate sponsors and vendors who sold food and products throughout the afternoon and evening. DJ Joey D kept the tunes going and students from the Del Couch Music Education Foundation performed on a second stage.

“This is our community — the S-One office is right downtown, so what better place to have Rock for a Cause than on Main Street, right in front of our office?” says Shauna Malgieri, chair of the Rock for a Cause executive committee. “We’re so grateful for the outpouring of community support for this event, and it keeps growing more and more each year. We’re excited to start planning the Cause for next year!”

How Your Contribution Keeps Us Rockin’

When you make a donation to Rock for a Cause you are gifting more than you could imagine. The funds from the 2016 Rock for a Cause will benefit the Del Couch Music Education Foundation, a non-profit organization designed to give children the opportunity to explore the world of music.

Not only does the Foundation help children develop their musical abilities, but it also opens up more doors to life-changing opportunities. For instance, S-One’s goal with this year’s Rock for a Cause is to send five Foundation students to Berklee College of Music Summer Programs. Foundation star and Bradenton-native Sam Woolf, who was a finalist on the 2014 season of American Idol, got his chance to audition for the show while attending a summer program at Berklee.

In addition to a chance to attend a summer camp, the Foundation offers ongoing mentoring, performance opportunities and many ways for kids to explore their love for music in an enriching environment.

Here are just a few ways your contribution can help:

  • $100 gives a student one month of guitar or voice lessons
  • $500 provides a keyboard or a guitar for the Foundation
  • $1,000 helps create a full in-studio production of a 6-song EP
  • $5,000 is a scholarship to send a student to a music education summer camp

To get involved, go to our Sponsors page, email srqrocks-submissions@sone.com or call 941.256.7983 today!

Rock for a Cause Kicks Off with a Rooftop Party

The music was wafting down Main Street, Sarasota, from up above, thanks to the talented group of musicians from the Del Couch Music Education Foundation, which is our new partner for the 2016 Rock for a Cause. The Foundation stars, Paige Merriman, Matt Walden and Sam Woolf, helped us kick off the fundraising efforts for the 3rd annual event, along with some major announcements from the S-One team, all on the fourth floor rooftop patio of the Ellis Building on Main Street.

Announcements:

  • In addition to welcoming our new partner, the Del Couch Music Education Foundation, we announced the official date of this year’s Rock for a Cause, which is Nov. 12, 2016.
  • Rock for a Cause is coming back to the streets of Downtown Sarasota! In fact, it will be held right on Main Street at Orange Avenue, in front of S-One’s headquarters in the Ellis Building.
  • S-One announced that it will dedicate $1 per every order for the two months leading up to this year’s Rock for a Cause.
  • Funds raised by S-One and partnering sponsors will be used to send Del Couch Foundation students to the Berklee College of Music Summer Programs.

“Our goal is to send five students to the Berklee Summer Program,” says Angie Lane, a member of S-One’s Leadership Team. “By donating $1 per order for two months, S-One is ensuring that one of those five students will definitely go. We’re counting on our generous sponsor partners to help us reach our goal.”

The kick-off party was complete with a rockin’ auction, with generous donations made by New Jersey artist Jay Alders, 2014 Rock for a Cause winners, Seven Years Past, On1 Cycle and Tropical Beach Resorts. Click on the gallery below to see scenes from the party, and call us at 941.256.7983 or email srqrocks-submissions@sone.com to learn more about sponsorship, vending and donation opportunities for this year’s Rock for a Cause!
