Doug Burns

After years of playing guitar and singing for the punk rock band Last Great Hope I decided to take a different direction and explore another style of music. I’ve always loved traditional country music, even before I really knew what it was all about. I never went for the pop stuff but always knew Johnny Cash was the real deal. He was kind of my “gateway drug” to other country artists like Hank Williams Sr., Waylon Jennings, Hank 3 and Guy Clark. In the same way the Ramones led me into punk rock, Johnny Cash opened the door to a different world of music.

But it wasn’t until a few years ago when I dug out some old records and listened to “Guitar Town” by Steve Earl that it hit me. The songs rattling around in my head sounded a lot like his and it dawned on me that what I was writing was more akin to country than punk but it still had all the same fire and energy. So now I am doing my own thing, writing and playing roots country songs mixed with Americana and Outlaw styles. My songs are definitely country music but they are also influenced by punk rock bands like Ramones and Social Distortion. They range from dark and lonesome to happy and up-tempo and are always deeply rooted by a hook and a catchy melody. At the heart of any good song there should be something that makes you tap your foot, hum the melody and remember it long after it’s over and that’s what I shoot for with every song I write.

So, with the release of my first solo album “Somewhere in the Middle” I am energized and excited for new musical adventures and experiences. I’ve been very fortunate to have already shared the stage with some of my musical heroes and have been booked to play festivals and large events. I look forward to playing in support of my record and can’t wait to share my songs with new friends, fans and the world because that’s why I write and play music in the first place. I already have a great network of people that support me and it’s growing every day. However, they are more than just fans or friends and like I tell them at all my shows, “welcome to the family!”
